HQ is a standard wireline core-drilling size. The hole is about 96.0 mm in diameter and the recovered core 63.5 mm.
When to choose HQ
HQ yields larger, better-quality core. Recovery is higher in fractured and weak rock, and there is enough sample for geotechnical and metallurgical testing. It is common in early-stage exploration and in the upper part of holes.
The general rule: a larger diameter gives more sample for analysis, a smaller one reaches depth faster and at lower cost.
Compatibility
In core drilling every tool must belong to one size system. To drill HQ, the bit, reaming shell, core barrel, rods, overshot and core boxes must all be HQ too. When mixing tools from different makers, check that threads and dimensions match.
