NQ is a standard wireline core-drilling size. The hole is about 75.7 mm in diameter and the recovered core 47.6 mm.
When to choose NQ
NQ is the most widely used size in exploration drilling. It strikes a good balance between depth, speed and sample volume, and is the standard choice in mineral exploration, especially in competent rock of medium hardness.
The general rule: a larger diameter gives more sample for analysis, a smaller one reaches depth faster and at lower cost.
Compatibility
In core drilling every tool must belong to one size system. To drill NQ, the bit, reaming shell, core barrel, rods, overshot and core boxes must all be NQ too. When mixing tools from different makers, check that threads and dimensions match.
