PQ is a standard wireline core-drilling size. The hole is about 122.6 mm in diameter and the recovered core 85.0 mm.
When to choose PQ
PQ is the largest size in the series. It gives the best recovery in soft, broken and fractured rock and is chosen for metallurgical and process testing that needs a large sample. PQ rods can also be left in the top of the hole as casing while drilling continues in a smaller size.
The general rule: a larger diameter gives more sample for analysis, a smaller one reaches depth faster and at lower cost.
Compatibility
In core drilling every tool must belong to one size system. To drill PQ, the bit, reaming shell, core barrel, rods, overshot and core boxes must all be PQ too. When mixing tools from different makers, check that threads and dimensions match.
